1 - First NYC day trip in way too long. It was full of so many of my fave things and some of my fave people (trains + coffee + pizza + art + Gordon Parks + rivers + books + beer + NvV + LG).

2 - Jon Batiste at the Warner just blowing everyone away, plus a surprise appearance by Trombone Shorty

3 - Flood lines along the Tidal Basin

4 - Partial solar eclipse adventures with my dad. Any adventure with him is awesome and any day that involves an hour spent “just” watching light is a good day. Bonus points when they overlap.

5 - 44! Here's to another year of learning/growing from experiments, mistakes, "failures," play, and more.

6 - Cyanotype experiments with a Mary Oliver quote that I keep thinking about.

7 - 18 years of this view and the sunsets still don’t get old.

8 - When it’s final crit and the students come to class in green pants, white sneakers, and a t-shirt to dress like you. This crew was an absolute blast to work with this semester.

9 - One last bloom from a new amaryllis plant.

10 - Lastly, satire at its finest.

July and August were full of pints, scones, adventures, awe, frustrations, amazing music, stunning landscapes, favorite places, dolphins and puffins, too much adulting, not enough studio, friends, family, two rounds of antibiotics, not enough time on the water or the courts, and lots of reflection and planning.

Onwards!

So it was an especially awesome honor to sit down with photographer/filmmaker Bernard Seaborn (@bernardseaborn) and photographer/educator Karen Ruckman (@ruckmanphoto) to talk about the rewards and challenges of image making at Lorton in the 1980s.

If you haven't seen the film, it's available to rent/buy through the link in @inlortonsdarkroom's bio, and I totally recommend it.

Swipe to see a throwback to the early/mid 2000s BTS shot with cameraman Gary Griffin (@listopadfilm), Bernard, and my favorite sound recordist. (Photo ©️PhotoChange LLC)

“Southern Live Oak in City Park, New Orleans, LA” “Southern Live Oak in City Park, New Orleans, LA” has been purchased by the DC Commission on the Arts & Humanities for their Art Bank Collection. Work from the Art Bank collection is displayed in DC government buildings across the city.

This piece is made by soaking a polaroid in water collected from the Mississippi River, and is part of an ongoing project about sustaining life during a climate emergency, focusing specifically on three distinct urban landscapes within the United States.

A huge thank you to DCCAH for their continued support and all that they do for DC artists.

I have a lot of thoughts on the contradiction of i I have a lot of thoughts on the contradiction of instant film (especially in today’s world) and a lot of thoughts on what blurry images are actually all about. And I’ve got a lot of love for NYC. Ever since my freshman year of college, it’s where I’ve escaped to when I’ve needed a break. Things always slow down for me when I’m visiting and the change in perspective allows for things to come in focus. For all these reasons, it’s not really a coincidence that a few years back, I intuitively started making blurry polaroids of buildings in New York, but it did take a few years for me to connect the dots a bit. As the dude says “new shit has come to light.”

One day, I’ll actually sit down and write about it all. Until then, here are 9 from NYC.

Thank you to LG, ES, KF, KG, JOS, SM, ML, L, MM, J, and Q for a most excellent weekend a few weeks ago.
I'm super excited for this new series of (hopefull I'm super excited for this new series of (hopefully) annual zines. Last year I wanted to find a way (beyond social media) to share some research and the process of working on this long-term project. The project uses rivers as an anchor point for three American cities, asking questions about sustaining life during a climate emergency. I'm slowly chipping away at it, and in 2024, I focused in on a few different ways of making images and photographed extensively in both DC and New Orleans.

It took a little longer than I had hoped to get the zine ready for print, but at long last, it's in hand and I'm excited to share some of the work, research, snapshots, memes, ideas, and more that influenced my work in 2024. There's even a project-inspired playlist (via the QR code on the back cover).

The zine can probs best be described as what you might see (and hear) if you came by for a studio visit -- or as a friend described it, "I feel like I'm inside your brain." Either way, I'm excited to share it with you all. Link in bio to order.
